Azusa (the City of Angels) is located in the westernmost corner of Los Angeles County, on the San Gabriel River. With a population of over 120,000 residents, it is one of the most populous and diverse cities in the United States. The first Europeans to visit what is now Azusa were Spanish traders in 1769. They named it Santiago de las Acacias after a small village nearby. In 1848, Mexican soldiers burned down the town while raiding Anglo territory west of L.A., leaving only few survivors behind. In 1852, azusa real estate developer Hiram Percy Maxim purchased 6 acres northeast of downtown for $1,000 from Drury Crouse Tucker III and established his new city on this land known then as "Tuckerville." A year later he donated an additional 8 acres for a public square that would be home to civic events, schools and other facilities related to downtown development such as theaters and churches. In 1865, when California became a state, Azusa voted to become an incorporated city under the leadership of Mayor John Pemberton with hopes that it could attract businesses and workers fleeing earlier sections of Los Angeles County eastward into Pasadena or Sherman Oaks or West Hollywood because those areas had become too congested around Glendale or Burbank. Azusa prospered during its early years despite occasional floods caused by overflowing riverbeds due to heavy rainsstorms during winter months; however street cleaning expenses increased significantly when water levels receded so rapidemente azusanos couldn't easily clear intersections quickly enough with their rickshaws without causing serious flooding damage; finally annexation by Pasadena brought about significant budget constraints within city government which led to unpopular decisions like building expensive sports stadiums instead of improving infrastructure like sidewalks or streetscapes that would improve access for everyone including low-income residents living near busy business districts such as Downtown Azusa (then called Park Row).
