Azusa, California is the birthplace of small batch coffee. The first coffee shop in Azusa was opened by a man named Herb Koffman in 1951. Koffman was inspired to start his own business because he found that big grocery stores were not selling the quality coffee he wanted to purchase. He started up his own business and began selling coffee from a small pot at home. Over time, Koffman's business grew and he started selling coffee beans all over North America. In 1974, he opened the first Starbucks in North America and soon after, other businesses followed suit. Today, small batch coffee is an important part of the Starbucks culture and there are now over 30 different locations worldwide serving up delicious cups of this special type of caffeine!

Azusa, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 5,031 at the 2010 census. The town is on the north bank of the Sacramento River, west of Fresno and east of Stockton. It has a mild Mediterranean climate and is known for its agricultural production, particularly almonds and pistachios. The first Europeans to visit Azusa were Manuel Nieto and Juan Bautista de Anza in 1776. Mexican Governor Pico created Azusa Rancho Los Nietos in 1824 from land donated by José Joaquín Mora y Mesa. A millrace ran through the center of town and water was available for irrigation from underground aquifers west of it. For many years most residents worked on adjacent ranches or farms raising livestock or growing crops; only a few peopleowned businesses remained until after World War II when they began to be acquired by local citizens or private companies like Western Union Telegraph Company.
