Azusa, California is one of the most historic places in America. It was founded by the Spanish in 1777 as Rancho San Gabriel, and later became a small town. Azusa began to grow rapidly after it was designated as the location for an entertainment complex called The Fairmont Hotel in 1892. Today, Azusa is a thriving community with a rich culture and history. The first Europeans to visit Azusa were traders from Spain who landed there on February 14, 1777. The group of ten men included Juan Manuel de Ayala, Pedro Fortunato de la Rúa and Felipe de Neves y Mendoza. They were looking for land that could be used for grazing and ranching operations. A few weeks later they discovered an area that would become known as Rancho San Gabriel. In 1892, The Fairmont Hotel opened in Azusa and quickly became popular due to its beautiful architecture and modern amenities. It soon became one of the largest hotels in California with over 2,000 rooms. In 1926 it merged with the Regency Ballroom Theatre which had been established in 1922 as part of Regency Opera House complex located on Main Street near Hastings Boulevard (now University Avenue). This merger created Azusa's first professional theater company which continues today under the name Regency Theater Company Incorporated (RTI) However, many of the buildings associated with early Azusa history remain unaltered today: such as old town hall where citizens met to discuss local issues; or Old School Drug Store where goods were sold until recently; or Bakery which still operates today across Hastings Boulevard from downtown Azusa One important development during this time was the establishment of agricultural colleges adjacent to what is now Regency Ballroom Theatre: Kern State College at nearby Moorpark began classes in 1923 while Diablo Valley College followed suit two years later In 1933 college students founded Northern California Teachers Union (NCTU), which remains active today . Zacatecas Normal School also moved into azusa during this time- providing educational opportunities for mothers working outside their homes . However, it closed its doors permanently around 1940s due to budget cuts by then Governor Goodwin Lyon
