Bakersfield is a city in California, United States. The population was 137,821 at the 2010 census. It is located in Kern County on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and is the seat of Kern County government. The first Europeans to visit Bakersfield were Spanish traders and missionaries who arrived in 1642. In 1848, Bakersfield became part of Mexico when it gained its independence from Spain. Mexican pioneers founded a town here in 1851 and named it Los Angeles de Bakersfield after George Baker, one of their leaders. The town gradually lost its importance as Mexico moved westward and gold was discovered in California. A railroad came through Bakersfield in 1882, making it a boomtown but also creating problems for the city because thousands of people were drawn to work on the railroad while few jobs remained available for those who did not have connections to either industry or politics. In 1916, residents voted to secede from Mexico and form their own country, which they called United States of America (USA). Because many people had close ties to both USA and Mexico during this time period, there was little stability within the new nation until after World War II when immigration began flowing into USA from all over Europe. In 1951, an act known as the Agricultural Act of 1949 made it illegal for any person other than farmers to engage in large-scale production of fruits and vegetables without first acquiring special permits from USDA (the predecessor agency to USDA). As a result of this law changes occurred throughout much of Silicon Valley due primarily to efforts by major food companies such as Monsanto that wanted access to local markets for products exported worldwide (see “Monsanto” sidebar). This original culture shock led some young women working at these companies into organized labor rather than remaining within their individual departments or workplaces; what we now know as “feminism” was then relatively unknown within these fields! By 1970s most American workers had retired/left technology firms leaving little opportunity for women outside traditional white collar occupations such as scientists etcetera who continued demands for more representation within unions inside factories where conditions could be improved somewhat with better management practices etcetera’ However progress has been slow given current political landscape
