The Bakersfield Army Base was originally built in 1911 as the First Battalion, California Infantry Regiment. In 1945, it was renamed the First Battalion, California National Guard. The battalion was mobilized for the first time on October 14th, 1946 and served in World War II. It activated again for the Vietnam War on November 4th, 1971. The battalion re-activated for Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm on January 8th and 9th of 1990 respectively. The first people to live in what is now Bakersfield were Native American traders and their descendants who traveled down the San Joaquin River from adjacent south-central California during the early 1800s. A year later, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at Stockton on Sacramento River about 20 miles (32 km) upstream from Bakersfield; this fort served as an early warning system for settlers in north central California. In 1846, Silver City was platted by James Folsom with land on both sides of the Colorado River north of Yosemite National Park; silver mining began there in 1849. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Fort led to increased traffic and settlement throughout north central California by 1850; many North Californians went through Bakersfield to get rich quick. At that time, Bakersfield had a population of 10 people and consisted of just a few buildings around Main Street. Although small potatoes were being grown here before 1860 when Elisha Gray started growing them for local consumption, there was no market for them until 1865 when railroads came into operation linking east coast ports with Mining country across the state line so buyers could purchase these crops directly from farmers instead of having to go through shipping companies or middlemen. This introduced new markets for growers all over Northern California which boosted production by 50%.
