The Coast Guard was formed in 1915 as the Harbor Patrol. In 1922, it became the Coast Guard Reserve. On July 14, 1948, the Coast Guard was activated by Presidential Order and placed under the Department of Defense. The first coast guard station was established in Bakersfield, California on October 1, 1948. The Coast Guard currently has a total of 9 stations throughout California and Nevada. In 2002-2003 tragedy struck when two boats collided off Southern California killing 6 sailors on board both vessels including 4 children This event led Congress to pass Bill HJ Res 353 known as “The Children’s Law Amendments of 2003” which changed how gift giving within military branches is conducted Now all civilians can contribute money directly towards buying marine equipment/gear for agencies like COAST GUARD
