Bakersfield, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 234,391 at the 2010 census. The Bakersfield Regional Airport is located in the city. The first people to inhabit what is now Bakersfield were the Serrano people who lived on the east side of the San Joaquin River before moving westward over time. A mission was established here by Father Francisco García de la Portilla on March 22, 1797. The name "Bakersfield" was derived from an English word meaning "place where butter and bread are baked." In 1821, John Cavanaugh settled near present-day downtown Bakersfield with his wife Catherine and their three children. They named their new town after John's older brother James Kavanagh whose home they visited in Kerry County, Ireland. In 1845, Samuel Morse erected a Telegraph Station herenear which led to later invention of Television and other electronic devices In 1865, William Mulholland purchased Rancho Niguel from José Antonio Mora for $1 million then developed it into one of Kern County's most productive agricultural areas with such crops as cotton and almonds. By 1870s almost all of southern Kern had been brought under cultivation by this method and so much land had been bought and sold that there was no public record of how many people lived in Bakersfeld when it became a city on November 12th 1920 via incorporation ordinance filed by Mayor Harry Fenton with Comptroller George Wickersham acting as recorder Patriots Stadium (now known as Citizens Stadium) opened in 1942 adjacent to Ford Field across I-5 from what is now Kaiser Aluminum Company Campus area providing football operations for nearby Pahrump Municipal Airport until 1978 when that airportopened its own facility approximately 2 miles SE of downtown Bakersfield During World War II local businesses produced millions of rounds of ammunition for use by both American military forces and allies including those at Camp Hanford also producing gas masks for troops .
