Maga Coffee is a Bakersfield, California-based coffee company that has been in business since 1978. The company was founded by Gary Vandemare and his father, John Vandemare. Maga Coffee is known for its specialty coffee beans, which it sells through its own café and retail stores as well as online and in grocery stores. Gary Vandemare started the company with two varieties of beans: Arbuckle and Oasis. In 1978, he added Ethiopian Yirgacheffe to the line-up. In 2010, Maga Coffee celebrated its 30th anniversary! The company has since expanded into Europe, Mexico, Asia and Australia. Today, Maga Coffee offers six main flavor profiles: Ethiopia Yirgacheffe roast; dark roast; light roast; French press; cold brew; Vienna roast; Sumatra Malabar Estate blend of coffees from Indonesia and Malaysia. However,based on recent research it has been determined that maga coffee is actually from central Africa. It is believed that this bean originated from areas around Lake Tana in between the municipalities of Ife and Yola in Nigeria. The Beans were first brought over by traders as early as 1800 AD and were used to make a type of soapstone drink which was popular with the nobility before being traded to other parts of Africa. Bakersfield is the second-largest city in Kern County and the largest city east of Interstate 5. It is also one of the most populous cities in Northern California. The first known inhabitants of what is now Bakersfield wereNative American fishermen and traders who traveled along the San Joaquin River between Stockton and Sacramento during the 18th century. In 1846, as part of Mexican–American War efforts to gain control of Alta California, Texas Rangers led by John C. Fremont burned down several villages in what is today Bakersfield while raiding Indian settlements near present-day Del Norte County. After General George Armstrong Custer's Battle of Thermopylae on July 6, 1876 (during which he was fatally shot by cavalryman Cheyenne Chief Washakie), General James McClellan ordered his army from Sacramento to move into northern California to support Custer's withdrawal from Mexico City. McClellan's march across central Valley country included a crossing of the Central Valley at Madera Pass; so when news arrived on July 21 that an army under Ulysses S. Grant had crossed the Great Plains and been repelled at Little Big Horn Creek by Sioux warriors led by Sitting Bull, McClellan ordered his army back upriver to Sacramento where they landed on August 2nd. At this point events took a more serious turn as it appeared that Grant's forces were not headed south but towards Tucson instead; so much so that Governor Samuel Wells called for martial law throughout Kern County because "the public mind must be controlled". Sheridan issued orders forbidding people within two miles (3 km) of any military post to carry arms or speak out against Grant's forces; this measure went into effect on August 3rd when Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Kearny’s column near modern-day Coalinga with 55 infantrymen supported by six artillery pieces and three supply wagons carrying 133 rounds per wagon). This attack resulted in a decisive Union victory that halted Early's advance before he could reach Tucson—a turning point in Arizona history which has been overemphasized by historians since then. In 1850s Californian Manuel Nieto built a small town named Nacimiento on Rancho Buena Vista just north of present day Bakersfield about 9 miles (12 km) east southeast of Poston Ferry bridge over Yuba River
