The first people to live in what is now Bakersfield were indigenous Californian Luiseño Indians who called the area "Tahoe de los Angeles" meaning "Valley of Los Angeles." In 1835, Captain John C. Frémont discovered Mono Lake and named it after his Assiniboine Indian Trading Post near present-day downtown Bakersfield. The post was abandoned in 1846 when gold miners discovered nearby Sutter’s Mill. A new trading post was built at the mill site by Michael Jordon in 1850 but this also failed to bring success to its proprietor. A group of Calaveras men founded a town called Jenks in 1851 due to an issue with an earlier name for the town - Antiochia (a corruption of Ανθρωπούταια or Antipodes). Unfortunately for Jenks investors there wasn't enough gold found to justify staying put and they abandoned the town within two years. By 1860, all but two businesses had closed down because of lack of customers or competition from other towns east of San Joaquin Valley like Stockton and Sacramento City. In 1862 James Waddell opened up what became known as Waddell's Store on Main Street which became one of the leading stores in America during that time period selling everything from groceries to mining supplies including weapons used during American Civil War such as cannons made by hand while stationed at Fort Yuma outside Tucson AZ In 1865 Hernando Cisneros organized a group including himself under leadership of José Romero y Gasset who went into partnership with Augustus Thornton to open a general store on 4th Street known as The General Store Of Hernando Cisneros & José Romero y Gasset which prospered until 1870 when Thornton sold out to Valentine Moorehurst By 1870 there were over 100 businesses operating out of what are now Downtown Bakersfield and much smaller communities around Rancho Cordova (now part) eastward including Westville (1871), Eastville (1872), Andalusia (1873), North Pole(1875), Canoga Park(1876), Arroyo Seco(1877) before finally being incorporated into Kern County on February 20th 1887 . On October 15th 1890 Jedediah Smith platted what would become today’s Town Square Area including all present day blocks between 1st Street southward towards 2nd Streets inclusive; this included present day Powell Boulevard northward along 3rd Streets past Ivar Johnson’s Drugstore prior to rejoining 1st Street southward near Schoolhouse Road; also included Allerton Road eastward formed by splitting off Race Course Road northbound from 1st Street southwest along race course road until joining again with 1st Street westward just insideCity limits . This platting created far more acreage for development than any other event throughout early Kern County history bothdue largely to Captain John C Fremont’s belief that if land could be tilled it would soon be available for settlement ... [W]e rapidly proceeded upon platting our little community which we called Centerville following Washoe Creek exactly west side thereof bounded northerly by First street running thence easterly unto Racecourse road where it intersected said creek coming within our limits . As Centerville grew rapidly we imported many settlers originally from eastern California who had come bearing trade goods such as lumber and hardware etc….. We erected some frame buildings here but no permanent home ever developed due mainly because people wanted their own piece of land rather then building next door neighbor against neighbor type housing………. centerville gradually began becoming an important commercial center not only due its location but also because it had access to water – something most settlements did not have until later.. After many years growth came a major tragedy when fire destroyed most everything within Centerville leaving only about 30 homes standing…It took several decades for Centerville properto reborn following those losses………………………………………..
