Bakersfield, California is a city in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 165,846 as of the 2010 census. Bakersfield is located on the eastern edge of the Central Valley and is bordered by Kern County to the north and east, Modoc County to the south and west, and Tulare County to the northwest. The area that now makes up Bakersfield was first settled by Native Americans in what is now central Fresno County. The first European settlement in what is now Bakersfield was made by Mexican settlers in 1838. In 1851, an act of Congress reunified all of California into one legal entity known as “the State of California”. This new state included parts of what are today Kern and Modoc counties as well as part of Tulare and San Joaquin Counties. At this time, it was decided that the City of Bakersfield would be named for Captain George Barker (1795-1868), one of the leading men during Californias Gold Rush period who had helped organize these new arrivals. Captain Barker's hometown was Nacogdoches, Texas which he left when he became a naturalized citizen of California in 1847. He arrived at Mission San Gabriel Arcangela on November 14th with his family after more than two years traveling across country aboard an overland journey from Mexico City via Sacramento and Stockton. Upon reaching their destination he set about organizing mechanics and other pioneering pioneers who were soon working alongside him to build some of southern Californias most famous attractions such as Anza-Borrego Springs & Empire Springs - then just a small ranch known for its hot springs rather than any great tourist opportunities Barker also played an important role in developing early irrigation techniques for much northern California including installation of canals near Needles which led to increased crop production In 1860 Captain Barker married Maria Cordero (died 1863), daughterof José Cordero y Tafoya who founded Rancho Nuestra Señora de la Concepción mission not far from present day downtown Bakersfield They had six children: Mary Ann (born 1860), George Washington (born 1861), Anna Maria (born 1863), Charles Edward (born 1865), Clara Barton ( born 1870)and Emma Maynard Barker (born 1872). By 1865 they had moved to Nacoochee Creek where they began farming Raisegewood near present day Midway Airport using oxen power until 1850 when an American Railway Company line reached town providing goods traffic only . A second railroad company arrived during World War II when Southern Pacific built a line running southeast from town connecting with existing tracks owned by Western Union making it possible for goods shipping containers loaded with munitions heading out onto Interstate 5 at Ensenada Bridge before being unloaded at inland points inland before finally reaching their final destination at Mare Island shipyards . The growth associated with World War II caused social upheaval which culminated withCaptain Barker's retirement from farming operations in 1951 following decades Of hard work . By 1970 there were only 7 homes still standing in raspberry orchard dating back to Captain Barker's days while 3% Of total land value represented agricultural production
