In 1946, Harry Kellar & Sons merged with Dutch Bros., creating one of the most prominent Bakersfield coffee companies throughout its long history. Dutch Bros./Harry Kellar continue to operate as separate entities today. Bakerfield’s rich coffee history can be found scattered throughout several museums and archives located within or surrounding the city limits. One such resource is the Harry Kellar Museum of Coffee History, which features exhibits on early coffee culture and technology as well as rare artifacts from the company’s past productions. Another important museum responsible for preserving Bakersfield’s coffee legacy is Douglas Fairbanks Jr.'s Beaumont Cafe Museum, which houses a collection of vintage equipment used in espresso manufacturing dating back to 1921. It is the county seat of Kern County and home to the University of California, Bakersfield. The area now known as Bakersfield was first inhabited by Native Americans, who called it Kaskaskia. The first European to visit what is now Bakersfield was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542, when he sailed up the California Coast from Acapulco Bay to Catalina Island. American traders founded a town named "Bakersfield" in 1849, but it never grew large enough to become its own municipality. A post office called "Baker's Ferry" was established at present-day downtown Bakersfield in 1852; this name may be derived from George Baker (1817–1887), an early settler and namesake of theCity of Bakersfield. In 1860, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down part of town while retreating from Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant; this event is generally considered to have begun Downtown's current development as a commercial center. In 1872, at which time Bakersfeld had a population of 25 residents and $2 per capita income – lower than any other community in Kern County – Mayor Cornelius Waddell ordered all shops and businesses closed until his election as mayor with a promise not to reopen them until after he'd been approved by voters for four years running; since then Downtown has experienced rapid growth in both population and economy due to its location within easy commuting distance for most parts of Southern California. Downtown's heyday came during World War II when many local businesses became involved in manufacturing items needed for war production such as tanks and planes; some even went so far as producing their own fuel oil for these endeavors). Unfortunately however, much like so many other communities throughout southern California during that period wartime prosperity suddenly ended without warning or explanation leaving downtown with little opportunity for redevelopment or revitalization once hostilities ceased domestically: One result was that today much of what used to make Downtown such an attractive destination now stands unused or derelict - something which could easily have been prevented if given better leadership throughout its history instead of being passed off as just another relic from Bygone Days
