Baldwin Park is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2000 census. Baldwin Park is part of the Rancho Mirage metropolitan area. The first people to live in Baldwin Park were the Anza-Borrego Missionaries who arrived in 1848 from San Diego. They built a mission complex on what is now the corner of Maple and Elm Streets. The community was named for General George Washington Baldwin, an officer with the First U.S. Regiment of Artillery during the Mexican-American War and general during Reconstruction in America. In 1871, jeweler and banker John Sutter bought land near present day Lake Arrowhead Boulevard and built his home there which remains standing today as one of only a few unaltered examples of a early 20th century Bungalow development in Southern California In 1916, American Electric Power Company (AEP) constructed an electric power plant on Solano Avenue just north of present day Sherman Road. The plant employed 8 men and women who worked nine hours per day, six days per week over sixty weeks while building two miles of transmission lines, twelve substations and 1,500 feet of cableway across Solano Creek . It was one of AEP's largest investments ever made at that time and it became known as "The Plant". Today AEP's building still stands adjacent to Interstate 5 along Solano Avenue between State Route 64 eastbound lanes and State Route 20 westbound lanes
