The Baldwin Park Army Base was first established in 1881 as the Presidio of San Gabriel. The base was moved to Baldwin Park in 1907 and renamed Fort George G. Meade. In 1942, it became the United States Army Air Forces' (USAAF) Central European Commands airfield, located between Los Angeles and Chicago. It served as a major bomber base during World War II, conducting missions over Germany, Italy, Japan and other parts of the Pacific Theater. In 1948, Fort George G. Meade reverted to its original name of Presidio of San Gabriel and it remained an army post until 1989 when it was sold to private owners. The Baldwin Park, California Army Garrison was established on July 24, 1851. The first commanding officer of the garrison was Major General John D. Stevenson. The army garrison was soon renamed the Baldwin Park Army and Navy Militia District on October 1, 1851. On November 15, 1862, the district became part of the newly created Southern California Military District headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. On January 14, 1865, it became a military department within the United StatesArmy under Major General George S. Balfour. In 1899-1900 a artillery battery was organized at the garrison and assigned to Fort Bliss near El Paso, Texas as a part of maneuvers being conducted by Major General Dwight David Eisenhower during his Commanding Officer's Course at Fort Bliss from September 9-December 12th 1898 while he served as Chief of Staff of United States Forces in Europe
Baldwin Park is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,554 as of the 2010 census. Baldwin Park is part of the Bakersfield–Delaware Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Baldwin Park were Native Americans who hunted and collected game here. A post office was established in 1877, and it has been in operation continuously since that date. In 1886, an American Railway Company track ran through the town, making it one of the few towns in Kern County without a railroad station when it opened. In 1912, Glenn Sitton built a large ranch here after purchasing land from Joséfina Castro and her husband Francisco Villa. After years of farming and cattle ranching, Sitton turned his attention to building a large water tower near his house to provide irrigation for his millions of plants on his rancho de las Flores (Rancho de las Flores). The new courthouse was built in 1924 and still stands today at 222 N Santa Ana Ave. Families from nearby Baldwin Park began moving into their homes here during World War II because there were no food stamps or other forms of assistance available for military families living far away from home. When the war ended and prices for housing increased across much of California, many military families decided to return home instead of spend more money on housing than they could afford back home. Many businesses which had thrived during wartime have declined over time; however, several small businesses have persisted such as Jiffy Lube convenience store & gas station (now closed), Mr Chips Pizza Place (closed), Mrs Kapp's Flower Shop (closed) & others like them throughout the cityscape over time-remarkably all remaining open until recently with only minor changes.- Mccarthy's Pharmacy which closed its doors after almost fifty years- Hometown Hardware Store which also closed its doors- hardware store located at 9600 E First St where Pee Wee Herman used to play
