The first white European to live in what is now Baldwin Park was Captain John Sutter who founded Sutter’s Fort in 1847. In 1853, a group of settlers from Alhambra named themselves “The pioneers of Baldwin Park” after they discovered an open land parcel that same year within the park boundaries. The name stuck and Baldwin Park became one of Southern California’s most significant cities for over a century. During World War II, many soldiers were housed at nearby North Hollywood Army Airfield which played a significant role in military life in Southern California during that time period.
