Today, Peet's continues to produce high-quality coffee under the name Dutch Bros., as does another local roaster, Open Road Coffee Company. They built their homes on what is now called "The Hill". The hills that make up Baldwin Park were once covered with trees and bushes which gave it its name. There are several theories about how Baldwin Park got its name. One theory suggests that because there was a man named Baldwin living in a house near where current day Main Street meets EchoPark Boulevard, people started calling him "Baldwin Park" after his house. Another theory suggests that when soldiers who were stationed at LAX passed through town they stopped at one of these houses and told the residents they had seen an Indian arrow shot from a tree in front of it - thus giving birth to this community's name. In 1892, James Waddell founded Jardine & Co., a grocery store and dry goods business on Main Street in Baldwin Park. His son John Waddell joined him as part of Jardine & Co.'s expansion into other businesses such as flour mills, bakery stores and clothing stores throughout Southern California during this time period. In 1916 James Waddell donated land for what would become known as downtown Baldwin Park β currently bounded by First Avenue eastbound and Euclid Avenue westbound β making it one of only two planned communities developed within LASA limits during World War II (the other being Montrose). Downtown pedestrian streetscape elements date back to early 1940s when City Engineer Lamar Guggenheim designedavenue between First Avenue eastbound (now Colorado Boulevard)and Second Avenue westbound (now Chavez Ravine), which included both city hall building(now MLK Jr./Jefferson Blvd.)and post office(now Staples Center).
