Banning, California is home to the United States Air Force's 1st Aerospace Division. The division numbers today at over 4,000 active duty and reserve members. The 1st Aerospace Division was organized on December 17th, 1947, as a merger of the USAF's two bomber wings: the 7th Bomber Wing and the 8th Fighter Wing. The wing motto "Never Let a Good Day go To Waste" has been honored by the division in many ways. For example, each year on December 17th (the anniversary of its creation), the division participates in fly-over ceremonies for California's State Capitol in Sacramento. In addition to flyovers, this year's event will also include an air show open to the public from 11am-4pm PST. Banning is named after Edward Banning and Edwin Ladd who donated land to the city. Banning's history can be traced back to 1875 when John Ralston founded the town of Nipton on Rancho San Bernardino de la Vieja (now part of Jurupa Valley). In 1887 James Fenton sold 160 acres (64 ha) of Rancho El Dorado to the City of BanNING for $5 per acre ($ in ). BanNING first convened as a town meeting on November 17, 1912 with Wm Hasty as Mayor and 21 other citizens voting in favor. On January 15, 1916 City Council passed Resolution No. 2 calling for a referendum on whether or not to become an incorporated city. A majority of voters approved incorporation by a vote of 11-2. The name "BanNING" was chosen because it was pronounced "banks". In 1932, during World War II the US military requisitioned all surplus food from local farmers so that it could be distributed through army camps across America; this led to conflict between farmer groups and cities over who got what food. After much discussion and negotiation between various groups within the community, it was decided that BanNING would become an unincorporated village with no physical boundaries until such time as there were changes within Kern County regarding military housing requirements; however this did not happen until 1954 when Kinney Act laws changed agricultural land use regulations which allowed for municipalities throughout Kern County to annex villages without specific approval from their respective governing bodies As part of its strategy for growth in post-war years, the City built several large industrial plants which took up valuable farmland around downtown BanNING while also developing several new neighborhoods including Warrior Park near Lake Arrowhead and Stadium Heights off I-15 near Mojave National Preserve . The 1990s saw significant redevelopment taking place with many apartment complexes being built along I-15 just south of downtown while shopping malls went up around Airport Boulevard east of downtown; eastern portions bordering Antelope Valley were developed into new towns called Las Vegas Hills while western portions became parts of Calabasas .
