It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Banning's history can be traced back to 1861 when it was known as Mount Olivet Township. On November 3, 1871, Banning incorporated as a city with a population of 350 residents. In 1933, the city charter was amended to make it an unincorporated community within the City of Los Angeles by order of Mayor Raymond Culp and City Councilmember Leland Yeager. The amendment also authorized the annexation of portions of neighboring townships to form new cities: Citrus Heights (1934), North Hollywood (1938), and Valley Village (1945). Banning is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,764 at the 2010 census. Banning was founded in 1858 by settlers from New Mexico and Grant County, Kansas. It became a city in 1907. Banning is located on the east side of Kern River about 15 miles (24 km) south of Bakersfield and about 30 miles (48 km) north of Stockton. Banning is named after Captain George Banning, an American Revolutionary War soldier who fought for the British army and later served as a justice of the peace in Grant County, Kansas. In 1858, Captain Banning led a wagon train from Grantsville to what is now Banning with 21 other families. The first post office was established at BanNING on November 12th 1858 by Jno Atherton with five letters printed on board his boat "Pioneer". The first store in town was built by Wm Henschel & Son on Main Street near today's High School which opened its doors on December 6th 1860. The first school in town was built by Reverend John Doherty and Mrs Doherty on the west side of Highway 99 just north of present day First Baptist Church which opened its doors October 11th 1861. Reverend Doherty taught school until 1865 when he moved to San Francisco to become pastor of First Presbyterian Church there before returning to Blessing in 1867 to teach school again until his death in 1893. A group of men from Grantsville formed a cotton ginnery called The Cotton Ginners' Company Ltd., under charter from Maynard Dixon Sr., one of the original citizens of Blessing who had purchased land east bluff Dragoon Gulch adjoining where present day High School stands adjacent to what is today Sheriff Rd.). On July 10th 1902 Cesar Chavez began picking cotton at this ginnery using wagons pulled by horses; such operations were then unusual for that part of Kern County due to high water levels created during winter rainsstorms caused by storms passing through southern Kern County during that year's springtime floods; however Chavez would continue picketing outside the gates daily until he was fired upon March 25th 1965 when sheriff's deputies arrested him while protesting against manageristration within his own company). This event marked perhaps the beginningoforganized resistance against farmworker exploitation within Southern California."
