Banning, California is a town in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 4,848 at the 2010 census. Banning was founded in 1892 by George Banning and his wife Emma as a post office and wagon stop on the Butterfield Overland Route. The name "Banning" comes from Indian Chief Bannekuhtee's Creek that flowed through the area. The first store in Banning was built by George Banning and his brother-in-law John Ivey on Main Street in 1892. In 1893, George Banning opened a general store on the site of what is now the Old Town Hall building. His son Sidney bought the business from him in 1902. By 1907, there were six stores open in BanNING: three general stores (George Bannings & Brothers, Sidney & Son), one grocery (J F Murphy), and one clothing store (Bennett). In 1916, Lester Wagoner sold his interest in the Clothing Store to J F Murphy for $2,500 ($ as of 2019). J F Murphy continued to run the store until he closed it down in 1951 due to financial difficulties. In 1922, Harry Laughlin opened a gas station at 355 Main Street which became an important stopping place for travelers enroute to San Francisco from East Los Angeles via Interstate 80. In 1927, Harry Laughlin's sons Edward and Noel purchased the gas station and renamed it "Laughlin's". It remained open until 1959 when it was replaced by an automated teller machine facility operated by JP Morgan Chase bank which remains active today as part of Wells Fargo Bank Plaza across from City Hall Plaza
