Banning is located on the east side of Kern County and bordered by Bakersfield to the north and east, Mayacaucho to the south and west, and Visalia to the northwest. Banning was founded in 1878 by Aurelius P. Banning as a place for farmers to buy goods from surrounding markets. In 1907, Banning became an unincorporated community when it merged with neighbouring Mayacaucho. A post office called Banning was established in 1878, and remained in operation until 1912. The first settler in BanNING was Aurelius P. Banning who arrived on July 3rd of that year. He named his new settlement after himself and his brother-in-law Michael Jepson (1820-1892). The first school inBanNING opened on November 1st of 1878 under instruction from Mrs Harris & Mr Kappelhoffer. It was known as “First School” because it served only children between the ages of 7-12 years old at that time! The present day elementary school building date back to 1916 when Mrs Deschene built it for $2 per month using local resources including lumber she had acquired from her father-in-law’s farmstead just beyond town limits. Banning experienced some growth during its early years but soon became overshadowed by more developed communities nearby such as Bakersfield andVisalia. By 1865, Banning had only about 100 residents and the population fell again until it peaked at around 150 in 1880. It declined further until 1906 when it had only two residents remaining. After that time there was little change to its demographics until it dissolved completely in 1961 due to declining populations and winding down of the railroad industry throughout Kern County.
