Barstow is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Kern River and is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Barstow was James Barstow, who arrived in 1853. He named his property Rancho San Pablo de los Pinos after Padre Francisco Solano's rancho near Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1860, Joshua Barney built a cabin on what is now main Street in Barstow and began to trade goods with the surrounding valley. By 1870, most of present-day Barstow had been developed as a farming community with Mission San Gabriel Arcángel serving as their church and center for education. The post office at Rancho San Pablo served both residents of Barstow and those living near it from 1868 until 1915. A small mill operated in nearby Richeyville from 1865 until 1875; however, production ceased because of prohibitionist efforts by Sheriff John Millingen. In 1886–87 the federal government constructed a new irrigation system west of present-day Barstow through which much later agricultural land was irrigated; this helped to increase crop yields and make life more comfortable for many villagers. The town's only store opened its doors on May 20th 1886 when Wm Hargrave & Bros., merchants (later known as Wernher Bros.) moved into an old adobe building that stands today on Main Street between Constitution Avenue and State Route 395 (now Interstate 5). A post office annex was built in 1918 at what is now Second Street south of Highway 99W; it closed upon the opening of USPS mail facilities located north of town along I-5 south to Needles during World War II. The last operator of the original Post Office Building before it became vacant was Jens Rasmussen who operated it from 1978 until 1984 before selling it to Donny & Marie O'Malley who ran it until 2000 when it went back into private ownership again; since then there has not been use for it aside from storage capacity withintown limits due to its decrepit condition . An early stage oil well named Eufaula Wells producing about 8 barrels per day yielded about $2 per barrel over two years gave rise to concerns about possible depletion due to overuse but no damage occurred despite high heat demands resulting from operations during hot summer days . Although local officials did some investigating they never took any actions concretely related to widespread depletion although field crews were dispatched regularly though few wells were actually drilled Thereafter Eldon Young reported sporadic reports throughout 1968 that water levels had declined below existing Well base line causing extensive drilling but no further results could be found
