One of the first institutions that started providing assistance to those who lost their homes or loved ones during World War II was The Salvation Army*. In 1947*, they established The Air Force Relief Fund (AFRF). This fund provided financial assistance to former members of the military who had lost their homes due to combat or accidents.* AFRF continued its support through numerous donations throughout the years* until it was merged into The Salvation Army National Corps in 1994*. Today*, AFRF continues its work through several different donation programs* including veterans charities*, disaster relief*, and food banks*. After WWII there were several developments within American society that made it more difficult for people to obtain firearms * particularly for civilians*. After all of these changes*, it became more necessary for Americans to find ways provide support towards their military brethren abroad* *. One way this support could be provided is by giving away firearms *. In 1961*, America’s First Shooting Sports Foundation (ASSF) was created****** To provide shooting sports access for everyone regardless of income* *. SF also helped create gun safety legislation at this time which helped make firearm ownership easier for civilians* *. ASDF would continue its work throughout subsequent decades***** until it was dissolved in 2004***** following a merger with another organization called Gun Owners Of America******

The Barstow Air Force Base Museum has a rich air force gift history dating back to World War II. In 1942, the USAAF began awarding commendations to individuals and organizations who donated items or services to the military. These commendations were known as "Air Medals." The first Air Medal was awarded on December 10, 1942, to Capt. John W. Hinton of the 14th Pursuit Squadron for his donation of an airplane to theAAF. In 1946, Lieutenant Colonel George P. Smith became the Commanding Officer of Barstow AFB and soon thereafter initiated a program in which USAF members would contribute items or services to the base in order to improve its facilities and appearance. This program continued until 1959 when all personnel at Barstow AFB were transferred to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio resulting in a dented hangar door at Headquarters Building and much needed funds being available for improvement projects at AFB. On October 2nd, 1960 Sgt Gail Aiken from the 433rd Wing contributed $543 worth of clothes and accessories to Headquarters Squadron which then proceeded onto other units within 434th Wing throughout November 1960 before finally arriving at Headquarters Squadron on November 25th 1960 It is interesting that this was also one year after Sgt Norma Jantz's donation of over 1,500 pieces/items including civilian clothing and personal effects (including Barbie dolls)to support her unit's Toys For Tots Drive campaign
Barstow is located in Kern County, California, about an hour and a half east of Los Angeles. The population was 8,774 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area.
The first Europeans to visit Barstow were Mexicans who journeyed from Mexico City on March 14, 1821, during the Alta California mission period. Captain David A. Porter arrived on February 26 of that year with three vessels and four men exploring Seal Beach Peninsula (now Imperial Beach). He named it "Bartow" after his landlord in England, John Bartlowe.
In 1846, James Waddell built a gristmill on Rancho Rincon de las Palomas which yielded flour for local marketplaces as well as supplies for Mission San Diego de Alcalá and other missions in southern California. In 1851–1854 two more mills were built by Captain Porter: one at what is now known as Broadway (founded in 1852) and another near present-day State Route 66 (founded in 1855). By 1860 there were ten mills operating in Barstow – five gristmills, three flour mills and two dairies/milksheds.
The railroad reached Barstow from Southern California through Amontillado Valley on October 9, 1861; however no railway station was ever established here because transportation between San Bernardino County to the north and Kern County to the south was by wagon road only then available across Owens River Canyonbridge crossing into Death Valley National Park via Furnas Pass Road bridge over Furnas Creek Gorge road NP but this route has been abandoned since 1975 when US Highway 395 crossed Furnas Creek Gorge connecting Onslow Valley with Death Valley National Park just south of today's town of Needles CA.)
A post office called "Barton" was established at this location on November 12th 1865 by John Fenton Postmaster General under US Mail Order No. 4207; however it closed due to lack of mail demand within a few months upon its opening. In 1870–1871 George Matson established a sawmill here which became one of the largest commercial enterprises in western Kern County until it went out of business during World War II. The first recorded use of the word "barstow" appears to be dated December 7th 1870 when Augustus Cushing wrote: "I passed through this place last night & found everything very picturesque - I particularly like Point Lobos." However according to some researchers believe that this letter may actually refer to nearby Blytheville although there is no evidence verifying this hypothesis.
In 1902 Charles Eames designed Anvil Millsinery Company plant #1 located next door to Anvil Millsinery Company plant #2 now used as homebuilt housing.

Barstow, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 7,591 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County and within the city of Riverside. The town was founded by Emmett Barstow in 1892 as a result of his efforts to create an agricultural settlement in what is now southern Riverside County. The first store and post office were built there in 1893. The name "Barstow" originated from the fact that it lay near two barks (or stocks) named after him - one on Topanga Canyon Road and one on State Route 66. In 1904, Barstow incorporated as a village under the name of Westfield Village. In 1915, it changed its name to Riverside City; but reverted back to Westfield Village upon incorporation into San Bernardino County in 1922. The community experienced rapid growth during World War II when many people came to work in nearby military plants or manufacturing facilities such as Carrier Corporation or Lockheed Aircraft Company. Post-war prosperity followed until the early 1970s when austerity measures mandated by Governor Ronald Reagan caused reductions in public spending throughout Southern California. Unemployment increased until it reached 10%. The economy began to rebound by the late 1990s but has since stagnated; unemployment remains high and wages are low relative to those found elsewhere in Southern California
In 1853, Barstow was founded by General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment of cavalry. The town became a stage stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. In 1865, it was renamed Barstow after John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States.
