Barstow, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Barstow were Juan Rodriguez Caballero and his party on October 25, 1769 when they reached the present day of Barstow Village on Rancho San Antonio Mission San Gabriel. They named it "Barretto" after one of their companions who accompanied them. In 1847-48 an ad in "The Gilded Age" advertised for a rancho that would include 8 acres (3 ha) of land at what is now known as Main Street in Barstow. The new owners were Mr. Fidelity and Mrs. Purdy Davenport and they called their rancho Santa Fe de las Palomas (). It was built about 1850 by Manuel Nieto and later acquired by Captain James Wolkentinck who renamed it Fort Stockton (). As the fort grew more important within Californian militarism during the late 19th century, Commander John Sutter moved his herd of cattle from Fort Stockton to this site in 1859 where he began building a stockade which became visible from Main Street today. A post office called Barstow was established in 1858, but never opened because no mail could be delivered through Mono Pass due to Indian attacks on Stagecoach stage coaches travelling between Lompoc and Sacramento en route to distant mining regions such as Tehachapi and Kings Canyon National Park during that period. In 1864-65 General Crittenden erected a strong stone wall around what is now downtown Barstow including parts of what are now Main Street and 4th Avenue.
