In 1828, Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French traveler, noted that “a rich grower of coffee” resided near Bolsa (Barstow). By 1840, goods brought back by Ulysses S. Grant during his Overland Expedition had shown that coffee was being grown not only in California but also in Yuba City and Stockton. In 1852, General Sam Houston purchased 5 acres of land at what is now known as Walker Rancho Santa Fe de las Animas in order to conduct experiments with new farming methods which he hoped would lead to increased production of crops like cotton and corn. The area today called Walker Rancho Santa Fe de las Animas was later home to one of America’s first commercial plantations – Juan Pico Coffee & Tea Company – which produced over two million pounds of coffees per year between 1912 and 1916. This period marked an important change for the history of Barstow because it saw a shift from small-scale agriculture to large-scale industry – something that would continue until after World War II when the Texas Coast Guard took over most plantation operations on the coast. As California grew more populous during the late 1800s and early 1900s, so too did demand for local roasted beans. In 1906, Walter Fenton opened Fenton’s Coffee Shop on First Street in downtown Barstow where he served quality artisanal roasted beans all day long until 1978 when he closed his business due to competition from larger chains such as Starbucks。 A few years later, entrepreneur Johnnie Doyle founded J D Media Company which became well known for its roasting operation located across from Disneyland Department Store on Imperial Highway #2E within walking distance of many residents throughout Southern California.. Doyle continued running J D MediaCompany until his death in 1995; however, many aspects associated with this company such as their roastmasters still remain responsible for making high-quality baristas' espresso drinks worldwide today….. On December 12, 1851, Barstow was founded by George W. Prentice and his wife Rebecca. The town was named after the Barstows in Westchester County, New York. The first white settler in Barstow was Charles A. Hargrave who arrived in 1860. Hargrave built a small cabin on what is now Main Street and started to cultivate land around it. In 1863, James Fenton purchased land adjacent to Hargrave's cabin and began to build a house; this soon became known as Fenton's Ranch House. By 1865, most of present day Barstow had been developed including its main parcel of land which is now State Route 101A (now Boulevard).
