The Coast Guard has been providing service on the Barstow Peninsula since 1852. The first station was built at Point Conception, and it served as a sea-going depot for supplies and personnel. In 1860, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was formed to provide support to the Coast Guard. The Auxiliary soon became an important part of the Coast Guard, and it played a significant role in stopping collisions between boats and ships. During World War II, the Coast Guard made a significant contribution to the war effort by helping to protect coastal areas from enemy submarines. The Barstow Coast Guard Station was established in 1907. It is the oldest coast guard station in California. The present coast guard station is located on the south side of Barstow, about one mile from the town center.
Barstow, California is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California. The population was 2,909 at the 2010 census[1]. It is located east of Bakersfield and north of Fresno. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1848. It became a post office in 1850 and a railroad station in 1875. The name derived from the Spanish word "barranco" meaning "wilderness". The town experienced a significant influx of Mexican immigrants during the late 19th century as part of the wave oflos mestizo Americanos who came to America following the Mexican–American War. Many barstows were also used as outdoor labor camps for hundreds of miles around central Kern County during this time.

Kitson was named after Captain George Kitson who served on board HMCS Beaconsfield when that ship participated in Operation Neptune’s Spear during World War II.. The first full-sized coast guardboat built specifically for patrol was USCGC Pascagoula which was launched on December 5th 1954 from Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Inc., Newport News Virginia under contract to United States Customs Service.. A total of six different types of coast guardboats have been constructed: PCG-3(Paddle Cruiser 3) – launched 1968; CG-1CG(Cargo Grave 1) – launch 1966; LPDR-12LPH(Longshore Patrol Boat 12) – launch 1974; MHB-(Masthead High Bridge)-launched 1976; HHB-(High Water Bridge)-launched 1978;; WTFAW( Yemen Trawler Aid Wagon)-launched 1984;; PYCMHW(Providence Yacht Harbor Helicopter Wing)-launched 1988;; HAGW(Heritage Aircrew Landing Platform)-launch 1990;; USCGC Gulfstream GTSLP(-.-.-.) - Launching 1998). As newer technologies arrived along with increased demands for better patrolling capabilities from both commercial operators as well as national security threats such as drug trafficking or piracy off our coasts, coast guardboats began becoming larger and more sophisticated than ever before designating them either USCGC/PGTFL(United States Custom House Fleet Patrolflotant Craft /gift - launched 2002)? CGC/PGTFL designation eventually expired on May 15th 2009 but still remains an active fleet patrolcraft providing coastal security services around world today?

In 1853, the towns of Barstow and Newbury were combined to form a new town, named after John B. Stow, an American senator from Massachusetts. The name "Barton" was chosen because it was one mile wide at its widest point. The population of the new town was only 10 people and it did not take long for the town to become known for its cattle ranching and mining activities. In 1860, a post office was established in Barstow and in 1865, a sawmill was built there. The first school in Barstow opened in 1871 and by 1880, there were five schools in the town. Mining activity increased during the late 19th century as a result of new finds of gold and silver near Barstow. By 1890, most of the gold had been mined out but silvermining continued until 1906. Today, some of the old buildings still stand including the original Post Office building which is now used as a library

After the war, Barstow experienced an economic resurgence thanks to new development along Interstate 5 and new jobs in technology and engineering. Today, BarstOW is one of Southern California's most economically vibrant cities with a thriving arts community and growing nightlife scene.
