Barstow, California is a small town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of San Bernardino County and east of Palm Springs. The first people to live in Barstow were the Mono people. They arrived in 1846 from central Mexico. The town was founded by George Barstow and his brother Edward Barstow who named it for Barsot–the place where they had been trading goods with their Mexican neighbors. A post office called "Barsot" was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1912. In 1902, Henry Ford built a Model T assembly line here while he was working on his Ford car company's production plant outside of Dearborn Heights, Michigan; this made Barstow one of the most important locations where Ford products were assembled during his early years as an entrepreneur. Today, local businesses continue to thrive thanks to factors such as its proximity to both Southern California and Nevada's Mule Mountains National Monument; its easy access to Interstate 880; and its quality education systems: including three schools that have earned national Top Ten rankings according to Newsweek magazine’s Best Colleges guide (2006-2009).
