John Haggerty and George Richards had been married just a few months before they started roasting their first cup of coffee. They named their business The First Coffee House because they wanted to make sure their coffee was fresh and good quality for customers who could not come to them directly from Mexico City. The Two Hands That Roasted: Jack & Harry Two years later, in 1881, Jack and Harry opened up their own grocery store in downtown Barstow which allowed them greater access to all the different types of beans being roasted at that time. In 1886 they started selling ground coffee as well as espresso powder which helped popularize espresso once again in America . It wasn’t until 1909 when Mr . Quaker announced he would start manufacturing his own bean grinders that things really got moving with roast Central America beans becoming available here in California for the first time!
