Barstow is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,867 at the 2000 census. It is located on the border of Kern and Tulare Counties. The first Europeans to visit Barstow were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The area now known as Barstow was part of Rancho San Luis Rey de Cuyutla Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Alvarado by Governor José Joaquin Mariano Castro on October 12, 1821. When Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1848, the grant became part of the new Mexican state of Sonora. In 1849, California Statehood was granted to the United States and portions of Rancho San Luis Rey de Cuyutla were included within what would become Los Angeles County. In 1861, after General Grant's Expedition into Mexico failed to capture Californias north-central area including western Nevada and parts of Arizona and New Mexico, Ulysses S. Grant ordered Major John Wickersham (1811-84) commanding general of military district No. 3 to explore northwestward into California forts Presidio (now City)of Monterey Bay and Fort Point at Carmel Harbor on November 13th 1861 from Yuma River Valley near present day Cathedral City eastward upriver past today's downtown Barstow then due south along present day US Route 395 about a mile east from marine terminal built by Navy Yard workers for Naval dockyard sailors used during World War II with expanded facilities now Fisherman's Wharf Marina operated by marina management company Inca Cannery Company which includes 11 fishing vessels used mainly for subsistence purposes primarily local fare except chartering out for coastal excursions up or down coast waters off Point Conception National Park near Ventura Harbor

Barstow, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 5,636 at the 2010 census. It is located about 26 miles (41 km) south of downtown Los Angeles and about 18 miles (29 km) northeast of Claremont. The first permanent residents in Barstow were Spanish muleteers who traveled to the Inland Empire on their way to Mexico City during the 17th century. They founded Mission San José de Guadalupe y Costilla on Rancho Borrego near present-day Barstow in 1692. A Jesuit mission was established at this location in 1769 by Father Junípero Serra with the assistance of Captain José Antonio Vargas and other Mexican soldiers. In 1821, Barstow became part of Rancho Santa Anita los Pinos Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Alvarado by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. At that time, it consisted of 1,000 acres (4 square kilometers). The Alvarados developed irrigated agriculture and cattle ranching here until 1912 when they sold their holdings to the United States government for military use as part of General John Blythe's Paullist effort to acquire land for a new national capital in Los Angeles. During World War II, much agricultural production took place here including fruits and vegetables; ammunition; cotton; oilseed rape; wheat; and livestock products such as dairy products and hay. Many local businesses still operate today including: two grocery stores, one post office, two banks (one open 24/7), four restaurants/cafes/bars, three sheriff's substations (including one with an arsenal), several housing developments including Veterans Memorial Park which contains a memorial park honoring America's veterans from World War II up through Operation Desert Storm/, five shopping malls throughout Southern California., six hospitals:, three universities:, three schools:, one ski resort,, one golf course,, numerous parks., many recreational areas., five waterfalls
Barstow is a city in southern California, located on the Los Angeles Basin. It is one of the most populous cities in Southern California and has a population of 298,815 as of 2019. The first European to sight what would become Barstow was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 14, 1542 when he anchored his ship San Salvador at anchor off Point Mugu. A post office called Barstow was established in 1847, and grew rapidly due to trade with nearby Rancho Santa Ana. In 1897, parts of La Habra were annexed into Barstow and it became an independent city. In 1932 the eastern edge of La Habra was annexed into Barstow to form another City government. The annexation removed much suburban development from the city center and produced a dense inner-city area which remains today. The downtown core still retains its old Spanish Revival architecture while many other contributing buildings have been replaced or demolished over time such as the now defunct Masonic Temple (1898) and Roman Catholic Cathedral (1901). Many bars and restaurants remain open dating back to this period including The Banker's Saloon (1899), The Vaudeville Theater (1911), Noodle House (1920), Anvil Tavern (1925) and Harpoon’s Cafe & Brewery(1932). On July 13, 2018, portions of auto dealership Park Place were included within the boundaries of neighboring unincorporated Simi Valley after their owner filed for bankruptcy protection amid allegations that they were defrauding customers with fake warrantiesUSA Today reported on October 1 that Park Place had filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings effective September 30th alleging fraudulent schemes involving more than $2 million in warranty purchases from customers between January 2009 through December 2017
