Barstow, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The name "Barstow" comes from Barstowe Manor which was built by David Barstowe in 1849. The manor was sold to Captain John Sutter and his family in 1853. Captain Sutter moved the family to Stockton in 1857 and renamed their home "Baker's Ranch". The ranch passed through several hands until it arrived in the hands of General George Armstrong Custer during World War II when he granted it to his friend and business associate Charles Lindbergh for use as an airbase for his successful flight from New York City to Paris. In 1951, President Dwight Eisenhower gave Barstow its own post office which remained in operation until 1993 when it merged with neighboring Lodi. In that year, Lodi became the first city in California to receive annexation from Kern County and so also lost its post office status; however, it remains a ghost town today with no residents living there because of lack of mail service or other reasons. Today, most people visit BARSTOW just for its history - one can find many interesting buildings such as the old jail (now a museum), schoolhouse (once used as an Army hospital during World War I), store building (built on land donated by Captain John Sutter), agricultural barns/outbuildings (used mainly for storage), and even one very large water well!
