Barstow is a small, unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the outskirts of Bakersfield and about 25 miles east of Fresno. The community was founded in 1884 as a result of the merger of two small villages - Barstow and North Barstow - which were both part of Rancho San Leandro. The name "Barstow" originated from Captain John Barstow's rancho (now called Rancho Santa Fe) south of the town site. Before the arrival of Europeans, Native Americans lived in and around present-day Barstow for tens of thousands of years. The first European to arrive in what is now Kern County was Pedro Fortunato de la Cueva during Mission San Diego de Alcalá's 1769–1778 expedition. He named a local stream "Barker Creek" after his late brother-in-law, Philip Barker (1672–1746). A post office operated at Barstow from 1881 to 1907. In 1911, construction began on the first commercial airport in southern California when Lancaster Airways leased land adjacent to Camp Roberts Army Air Field for its new airport project. When World War I started, Southern Pacific Airlines built an auxiliary airfield nearby that became known as bomber strip Laughlin/San Bernardino Airport. After war ended, Southern Pacific upgraded Laughlin/San Bernardino into an international airport that served all points within Los Angeles County and much beyond. The 1920s saw intense growth at Laughlin/San Bernardino Airport with international arrivals totaling more than 12,000 per day by 1941; however, it closed due to World War II shortages of runway space and other aviation needs around Los Angeles County while other airports grew rapidly throughout California. In 1951 – following Interstate 5's widening – Camp Roberts Army Air Field reopened as El Centro Municipal Airport; however , El Centro never gained the same level or importance as Camp Roberts as it did elsewhere in southern California; nevertheless, Camp Roberts remains an important military installation dealing with such activities as helicopter operations over Bakersfield by US Military Helicopter Commanders School & Flying Training School Falcon Crest AFB.. In 1984 – following passage by congresswoman Barbara Lee Of CA That All Aircraft Operators Be Registered With FAA – Camp Roberts Army Air Field became also known under its current name: BARSTOW AIRPORT .
