Barstow, California is located in southernmost Riverside County and is bounded by the San Bernardino Mountains on the east, Interstate 10 on the south, and Barstow Creek on the west. It was founded in 1853 by Captain Isaac L. Bowen as a trading post on the Palomar Ranch of George C. Frémont. The town was named after Baron Bartholdy von der Stadt, who had sold land in what is now Pasadena to John Sutter in 1847. The first European to visit Barstow was Elias James Cooke on October 12, 1853. Cooke noted that he found it "a sterile piece of country" with "no water nor anything but sagebrush for cover." He also noted that there were no people living there and that it would be necessary to find out more about this new place before making any decisions about developing it. In 1861, Charles Goodwin founded an agricultural cooperative called Goodwin's Land & Dairy near present-day Hesperia Boulevard and I-10 (now Shasta Boulevard). Goodwin's cooperative grew into one of the largest dairy companies in California during the early 20th century. In 1915, Goodwin donated his entire equipment and farm acreage to Carleton College in Claremont CA so that they could establish a program of agricultural research which continues today as Carleton University’s School of Agricultural Sciences
The first post office in Barstow was established on July 1, 1892. The name of the town at that time was "Dinwiddie".
