Barstow is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and is bordered by Mono County to the northwest, Kern County to the northeast, and San Bernardino County to the southeast. The name "Barstow" means "place where there are many trees." The first post office in Barstow opened on October 25, 1882. At that time it was called "Herschell". The name was changed to "Barstow" on July 16, 1904. The townsite was laid out by George Ketchum and Jethro Moulton about 1887 as a station for stagecoaches between Winterset (now White Sands) and Mojave City. A lumberyard operated here until 1907. During World War II Barstow became an important military airfield serving as home base for variousAAF units including bomber groups such as Ninth Air Force's P-39 Airacobra squadron which flew combat missions over Japan from 1941-1945; Fifth Air Force's B-24 Liberator Mitchell bombers flying strategic bombing raids against Nazi targets; Ninth Marine Amphibious Excursion Group which landed troops at Kwajalein during Operation Hailstone; Seventh Fleet task force based at Ulithi during the Battle of Okinawa; and Tenth Naval District antisubmarine warfare operations off southwestern California from 1942-1943Operation Neptune's Spear). A modified version of Boeing twin turbojet engine Noorduynen–Doenitz fighter plane housing two cannons was produced by North American Aviation company Barstow Airport Specialty Manufacturing Plant #1 for USAAF use from 1951 through 1955 known as Republic F4U Demonstration Aircraft (RF4U/D3N). This aircraft served with USAF Tactical Fighter Command interim squadrons until withdrawal in 1957 when all operational fighters were transferred to USAF Tactical Fighter Wing (TTFW) activated at El Centro AFB, CA in 1958 then moved northward to Robles AFB before being finally withdrawn from service in 1959. Barstow, California is located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The town was founded by Joshua Barstow in 1847 as a post office and trading center for miners who prospected in the nearby mountains. By 1870, the town had grown to become an agricultural community with water rights from the Owens River. In 1911, Barstow became part of Riverside County and experienced rapid growth due to its location at the intersection of Interstate 8 and State Route 66. The population reached 100,000 by 1920, but declined during World War II because of military activity in the area. The postwar period saw a rebirth of Barstow as a bedroom community for Riverside County residents. However, economic decline led to bar closures and a decrease in population over the last several decades. Today, Barstow remains an agricultural community with a small amount of commercial activity.
The first Europeans to arrive in Barstow were the Spanish, who landed on December 14, 1769. The town was founded by Captain José Joaquín de Arrastia and his wife María del Carmen Chávez. In 1821, it became part of California.
