The history of the Navy in Barstow, California can be traced back to 1853 when a group of Marines from San Diego landed on Lompoc Peninsula and established a military post. The Marines were quickly reinforced by sailors from the USS Constitution who arrived in 1857. These two organizations combined to form the 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment Marine Corps on October 15, 1861. On November 25, 1861, at 4:00 pm local time, Commodore John D. Sloat commissionedUSS Constitution (CVS-1) with 36 marines as her first complement. This event is also celebrated annually as Commodore John D. Sloat Day in Barstow. During World War II, the Barstow Naval Air Station was activated and became one of the most important naval bases in California due to its location within easy reach of Japan and their concentration of aircraft carriers and submarines. It was during this time that many famous pilots such as Joe Barbera flew out from here including Amelia Earhart and Chuck Yeager. Today there are still military installations located at NAS Barstow including fighter jet airfields and an ammunition depot which has been used for storage since 1945
