Beaumont is a city in San Bernardino County, California, located on the eastern border of the county and east of Los Angeles. As of the 2010 census, the population was 134,711. It has been home to many famous people throughout its history including General John Pershing and actor Clint Eastwood. The city was founded in 1872 by George Beaumont and his brothers-in-law James Irvine and Prentice Mulford. Beaumont was incorporated as a city on January 15, 1893. The area that makes up Beaumont today was first inhabited by Yokuts Indians who lived near present-day Echo Park and Montrose Heights. In 1821, Spanish soldiers commanded by Colonel José Joaquin de Arguelles discovered an area of land that would become Beaumont when they traveled through what is now Orange County during their invasion of southern California. The Presidio of San Bernardino was established on this site in 1824 following Mexican independence from Spain. The first permanent settler in what would become Beaumont arrived in 1827 when Captain Henry Miller built a cabin on Rancho Rinconada just east of what is now Main Street. A year later, he married Mary Potter with whom he had six children; three were born here: George Washington Miller (1828–1902), James Irvine (1830–1906), and Alice Atherton Potts (1832–1900). In 1847, Major Jesse Hahn purchased 640 acres at Point Conception from Francisco Moreno for $800 cash plus 20 horses to ranch near present day Fillmore Avenue and Baseline Road which became known as Hahn’s Rancho Seco after him. One year later, Hahn sold his holdings to Hugh Nibley for $10 per acre which led to the name “Hahn’s Addition” given to the entire strip between Fillmore Avenue/Baseline Road and Mountain View Boulevard where Nibley constructed his own house called “Nibley’s House No 1” still standing today within City limits! In 1850, Agustín Castro acquired 2 tracts of land northwest of Fillmore Avenue/Baseline Road for $420 each which became known as Castro Valley because it lay beyond any Measure R grazing lands set aside for cattle owners within San Bernardino County at that time! By 1860 about 60% of all agricultural production in San Bernardino County had occurred within five miles or less of downtown! This increased demand for local produce caused prices for goods sold throughout western California to rise significantly! In 1861 both James Irvine Sr.*and John Irwin*deemed themselves able to purchaseadditional parcels totaling 246 acres adjacent to Josefina Street off Baseline Road just northeast of downtown Beaumont creating what is now bounded by Highland Drive/Baseline Rd., North Beach Boulevard/Canyon Lake Rd., Baseline Road NW*, Main St./Beach Blvd., Archuleta Dr./Pinecrest Ave.*Today this parcel forms much part thereof comprising portions of Chavez Ravine & Golden League Dr.. What followed over ensuing years were numerous small businesses struggling against larger ones until 1911 when entrepreneur Wm Fenton leased 3200 acres southwest corner(northwest side)ofFillmore Ave.-Baselines Rd.-Mountain View Blvd.-Eagle Rock Blvd.- forming today's boundaries around Downtown using his initials WD*FWF*SB*. Today there are several remaining properties associated with this period including: First National Bank Building (now Home Depot), Banker's Trust Building (now Wells Fargo Financial Center), Masonic Temple (now Southland Medical Center), corner(northwest side)ofDowntown fillmoreave &baselines rd., Chianti Winery (& Galleria shopping center)--all still extant physical remnants or cultural influences upon Downtown itself--just outside City Limits
