Beaumont, California has a rich history of being an important military and civic center. The city was founded in 1879 by American pioneers, and played a major role in the Mexican-American War and the California Gold Rush. In 1892, Beaumont became a town with a government established to provide for its residents. The National Guard was organized in 1903 as part of that effort. Since then, the National Guard has played an important role in local and statewide affairs. It has been deployed in various emergencies such as floods, earthquakes and riots. The Guard also provides law enforcement services to the community. The first units of the Beaumont National Guard were activated on November 15th, 1903. At that time, it consisted of twenty-four men from San Antonio County under command of Colonel Alfred Sanger. These soldiers were used to protect transportation routes frequented by gold miners during the early days of Nevada's Gold Rush. In 1915, Beaumont joined other cities across America in supporting President Wilson's efforts to end World War I through economic mobilizationism known as "the New Deal." As part of this effort, Beaumont became one of the first American cities to establish a Municipal Defense League (MDPL). In 1932–1933, Beaumont was one of several cities selected for participation in the famous " March on Washington" event led by General George Custer and his Native American cavalry unit THE WILDFIRE ARMY

The Beaumont National Guard was organized on February 14, 1861. The first unit to be raised in Beaumont was the 1st Battalion, California Volunteers. On November 25, 1861, the 1st Battalion became the 2nd Battalion, California Volunteer Infantry. The battalion was re-raised on December 15 and January 6, 1862 with a new organization: the 3rd Battalion California Volunteer Infantry. On May 18, 1862 the 3rd Battalion was redesignated as Company A (1st Calvary) of the 8th Regiment California Volunteers Infantry and ordered to serve at Fort Tejon in Monterey County. Company A arrived at Fort Tejon on July 12 and remained there until September 9 when they were ordered back to Sacramento for duty with General Crittenden’s brigade during the Second Battle ofierce Valley Campaign. They again fought at that battle on October 20 before being order to return home for winter quarters near Stockton where they stayed until spring of 1863. In April 1863 Company A moved south to join General Kearny’s column in Nevada Territory while also serving under Lieutenant Colonel John Sutter’s command at Cerritos Creek. There they joined other units in attacking Las Vegas from various directions; however their attack failed due to lack of supplies and reinforcements which delayed Kearny's march into Carson City until after dark on April 24th when he finally reached it safely. After Kearny's arrival in town Companies A and B formed two lines abreast along North Main Street; one line facing Carson City Cemetery towards Fremont Street while another line faced South Main Street towards Fillmore Avenue] company B made an attack against an entrenched battery but this also failed.] In late May 1863 Captain George Waddell replaced Lieutenant Colonel John Sutter who had been killed during action at Cerritos Creek.] A detachment from Company A served as aides-de-camp under First Lieutenant Francis Egan while he commanded a brigade attached to Brigadier General William Walker during his campaign against Black Hawk Sioux;[the detachment numbered about 30 men including Captains James Hickey and David Irwin] later that year company A received orders moving eastward under Major general Don McCulloch camping near Piney River where they skirmished with Sioux before withdrawing without loss on October 10th]. Company A camped around Willow Flat all winter long awaiting orders rearward] In March 1864 Captain George Waddell resigned his commission and returned home sick leaving his unit command unoccupied...] At Camp Bowie six companies from Beaumont National Guards regiment were mustered out effective June 30 following service in Mexican War]; these companies constituted Battery D (2nd Calvary) of San Antonio Light Artillery which became part of Texas Department of Defense upon statehood]]
