The Naval Air Station Beaumont was established in 1915 as a training station for aviators. The base became an squadron of the First Marine Aircraft Wing in 1944 and then the First Fleet Marine Air Wing in 1945. It served as a homeport for Marines during World War II and the Korean War. The significant oil discoveries at Lick Oil Field led to increased production throughout much of North America during World War II but especially at Beaumont where over 2 million barrels per day (bnd) were produced from 1942 until 1945 when production levels peaked at 3 bnds/day
