The United States Air Force deployed a gift to the citizens of Bell Gardens, California on December 10, 1941. The gift was an airplane known as the "B-17 Flying Fortress." The plane had been donated by General Electric Company and was christened the "Bell X-1". The Bell X-1 flew for the first time on December 11, 1941. It was piloted by Captains John F. Kennedy and Edward R. Murrow. The aircraft represented democracy in action and its flight demonstrated that air power could be used effectively to fight against fascism. On December 17, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and America declared war on Japan. In response to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States military began deploying planes and troops to China as part of Operation Husky. On December 24th, President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered the mobilization of all American forces in case Japan attacked again. As World War II continued, planes from both the United States Air Forces and Japanese Imperial Navy were sent into battle over Europe and Asia. In 1946, after World War II ended, many bomber airplanes were retired from service due to their age or maintenance problems which led to their being stored away in various airports around America until they were finally mothballed in 1955 at Edwards AFB in California. One such airplane that still remains is the "B-47 Stratojet" which currently flies daily from Diamond Head Airport outside of Maui into Honolulu International Airport where it arrives passenger bound for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Bell Gardens quickly became known for its lovely gardens – then called simply 'Garden Grove' – which were originally developed by Mrs Joice Hetrick near her home on Prospect Avenue between La Brea Ave./Slater Blvd./Evelyn St./Jupiter St.–later renamed Empress Way–and continued to be managed by her until her death in 1928 at age 86 years old; thereafter they were managed by her trustees until 1940 when Helen Dance took over as trustee emeritus.. Bell Gardens is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 26,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Bell Gardens was founded on October 15, 1887 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law George W. Carey as a small settlement on the east side of the Santa Anita Mountains, about northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The first post office was established at Bell Gardens on December 12, 1888. The name "Bell Gardens" may have been chosen because it resembled a bell that had once been used in demonstrations to promote irrigation water supplies for agriculture near Pasadena.[2] The first store opened in 1889 and soon became one of the most important businesses in town. By 1912, there were six stores and two banks in Bell Gardens with a population approaching 100 people per square mile (38 km²). In 1915, when Belmont Avenue was built through Bell Gardens and annexed intoLos Angeles proper,[3][4] business development slowed but did not stop; there are still five businesses located within one block of Belmont Avenue north of Venice Boulevard that sit below sea level.[5] A public library was built in 1916 at what is now 222nd Street and Mulberry Drive (now called Vinegar Hill Road) serving all of eastern San Bernardino County including Bell Gardens Village which extended into neighboring Riverside County until annexation by Orange county in 1957[6]. The Bell Gardens area was originally part of Central Park and became a separate municipality on November 14, 1892. It annexed parts of neighboring Willowbrook on December 1, 1944 and grew rapidly during the postwar boom period. The city's first president was James Hickey. On January 1, 1907, the bell from Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church (now Pacific Union Cathedral) tolls to signal the opening of Bell Gardens as a municipal town with its own government. During World War II, many servicemen lived in Bell Gardens because it had no real housing available and there were few restrictions on where people could live in Los Angeles County at that time. Many high-ranking military officers also lived in Bell Gardens due to its quiet streets and easy access to transportation. This wartime period marked also the beginning of important strides for public education in Bell Gardens; after years of work by school trustees and community members alike, an American Legion elementary school opened in 1951 which would serve as the catalyst for furthering public education within the city limits ever since. In 1957 Benito Juarez Elementary School opened adjacent to Pacific Union Cathedral making it one of only two schools serving all neighborhoods within City Limits at that time – though this configuration would change soon afterward when Benito Juarez Elementary closed its doors for good following allegations of lewd behavior by some students inside the building).
