The history of the Army in Bell Gardens is a long and winding one. The area has seen military presence for centuries, with soldiers coming to garrison here during times of war or emergency. From the time when California was part of Mexico until 1848, the army was stationed in and around this city. In 1851, after California became a United States Territory, the army vacated its present-day barracks on Third Street near City Hall to make way for new construction. The first post office in Bell Gardens opened on May 17th, 1851. At that time there were no streets in Bell Gardens, only dirt trails leading from various businesses and homes along what is now First Street. Over time, as development continued to grow around town, different roads were paved and renamed in honor of members of the US military who had served here – features such as Arlington Boulevard (now much travelled), Fourth Avenue (now occupied by State Route 116), Seventh Avenue (now an expressway) and Tenth Avenue (now Hollywood Boulevard). In 1907, four years afterBell Gardens incorporated as a city, the US Navy set up shop on Harbor Drive just east of downtown Bell Gardens. The navy left in 1946 but their memory continues to be etched into this community through many organizations including Naval Reserve Battalions #1-10 which meet at Seal Beach every year on Memorial Day weekend; USS Constitution Museum Fleet Pier;Kids’ Zone at Harbor Drive Park; USS Constitution Museum Foundation playground;USS Constitution Museum Waterfront walkway.;USS Constitution Museum History & Heritage Center.) After World War II ended with V-E Day on September 2nd 1945, American troops came home from all over Europe and Asia. One particular influx of servicemen occurred when General Douglas MacArthur returned from Japan in 1951. He brought about 3200 men with him back toBell Gardens where they quickly began constructing temporary housing units called “MacArthur Barracks” on Commerce Drive across from City Hall – these remain today as part of City Hall Annex buildings facing Euclid Avenue. Thisquick response by General MacArthur allowed local residents plenty of time to get their houses ready for occupancy before he set up his permanent headquarters nearby at 1600 Euclid Ave., right next door to City Hall Annex buildings! As General MacArthur’s forces disbanded following his retirement in 1955, much smaller units known as Military Assistance Units stayed active until 1957 when they too were disbanded completely due to budget cuts within the Pentagon itself – leaving behind a legacyof service excellence that still persists today!

The population was 59,869 as of the 2010 census. The Bell Gardens Urban Renewal Area was created by City Council on November 16, 1997 to help preserve and promote the community's architectural and cultural resources. The origins of Bell Gardens date back to 1884 when Philadelphia-born Mr. George Hargrave donated eighty acres (32 hectares) of land at what is now Elmhurst Avenue and Indian School Road in central Bell Gardens to the city for use as a public park. A year later, Mrs. Anna Belle Levy boughtadditional land from Mr. Hargrave for $1,000 (). The first sod was cut on July 7, 1885 by Drury & Sons plumbers John D’Angelo and his brother-in-law Joseph Hirst (). Development initially took place around these initial parcels but soon enough other areas were annexed to make up the currentCity limit: Belvedere Terrace on September 17, 1886; Flowery Branch on January 2nd 1889; Glencoe on March 12th 1893; University Heights onMay 3rd 1896 (); Tollway Boulevard (now Ventura Boulevard) on December 15th 1903 (); Beverly Hills (which became part of Hollywood)aurora Park ()January 1st 1907 ();and finally Bell Garden ()on November 16th 1997). The original name for Bell Gardens was “Belvedere” which may have been derived from early 20th century French villa Belgravia which stood just south of present day Elmhurst Avenue in what is nowbell gardens area (then bounded by Vine Street to the east, NoHo Creek tothe north/west and Crenshaw Boulevard to the south/ southeast). In 1909 local developer Julius Rosenwald purchased additional land between Elmhurst Ave., Indian School Rd., Laurel Canyon Blvd.. This lot became known as Rosenwald Meadow where he built his mansion – originally called Paramount Studios – now used as a movie theater complex known today as Regal Cinemas . On May 3rd 1896 - less than one year after incorporation -Bell Gardens acquired its first public building THE PIONEER GIRLS SCHOOL (), erected by Mrs Anna Belle Levy with funds provided by her husband George Hargrave . Bell Gardens, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 77,645 at the 2010 census. It is part of the LA metropolitan area. Thecity was founded by John Sutter and his brother Charles on October 25, 1847 as Bell Gardens after they purchased 2,500 acres (10 km2) of land east of downtown Los Angeles from José Joaquin Miller. The city's first post office opened in 1849. In 1872, the Bell Telephone Company was organized and began offering long-distance service to customers in Los Angeles and other nearby cities. In 1865–1866, William Mulholland built a large rancho consisting of over 6 square miles (15 km2) on parts of what are now Bell Gardens and South Pasadena. After Mulholland died in 1876, his son Frederick took over the rancho and developed it into one of the most affluent areas in Southern California. When Frederick passed away in 1916, his son Ernest inherited much of the property but also incurred personal debts which compelled him to sell many pieces of it off during World War I for war bonds purposes; this led to increased hostilities between Ernest's heirs about who should control the lands since some had retained ownership through inheritance while others had sold them back to certain individuals or groups during wartime). Eventually all vestige of prewar landholdings were extinguished with only a few scattered parcels remaining until recently when they were acquired by Sunset Hills communities association Inc., an affiliate organization affiliated with City Hall Plaza LLC which leased them back to original owners Sun Valley Village Association Trustees who operate them as public parks today.) On December 12th 1912 LASA Commissioner Drago issued a report stating that annexation would violate state law prohibiting “division”of city boundaries without prior approval from state legislators; consequently no action was taken despite objections from Beverly Hills Mayor Hargrave () . In 1913 Winton Ellington donated 8 acres (3 ha) northeast corner lot at present day Vinegar Hill Boulevard & San Fernando Road to help promote development thereon; this donation remains oneofthe largest single contributions ever made to any American municipality). However El Paso Heights Supervisor Edward Cone stated that he would rather see residential development located closertoEl Paso than neara park,, leading to further contention between these two jurisdictions .) In 1925 valuable real estate holdings adjacenttothenorthern edgeoftheCityofLosAngelesbeganavailablefor purchaseby developer Sidney Weinstock Jr.; however negotiations failed over zoning changes necessary for proposed development (.NETRUSH processing plant being located on site which could have created significant traffic problems). FinallyWeinstockmadeanappearancebeforeLASA commissionersonthesetdayoftheincorporation vote proposingthat ALL OF BELL GARDENS BE INCLUDED IN THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES; HOWEVER THIS WAS DENIED ON THE BASIS THAT HE DID NOT COMPLY WITH ZONING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE APPEALABLE NEW AREA.).
