The name Bell Park comes from the original post office location, which was near the tracks that served as a main route into town. The area now known as Bell Gardens originated as part of Rancho San Gabriel land grant given to José Peña by Governor Manuel Nieto on July 6, 1871. Peña named his property for his wife, Jennie Elizabeth Graham (née Smith), niece of Sir John Ayer Campbell and daughter of Major General James Buchanan Johnston (Juan Bautista Graham). Mrs. Graham was married to Senator William Paley of Illinois and gave birth to two daughters: one married Alfred Hutton (1868-1927) and one becameMrs. Arthur Ashe (1901-1991). In 1907, real estate developer Walter Hirsch designed what would become known as "The Villas," or "Hollywood Hills." What are now some of Hollywood's most prestigious addresses were then developed around this time including Bel Air (+$10 million in 1909), Brentwood (+$25 million in 1912), Malibu (+$50 million in 1913), North Hollywood (+$90 million in 1922), and Carson City (+$135 million in 1946). During World War II many residents moved away for fear of being drafted but returned after the war when new housing developments came online such as Paramount Valley ($5 million dollar gift from Edwin Ralston Jr.) In 1950s/60s several well-known architects designed large estates here including Skadden Arps Fine Arts who built MGM Grand Garden Arena; it remains one of Beverly Hills' largest employers today employing over 9,000 people across three campuses—the old studio complex at 90th Street between La Brea Avenue and Vine Street; new offices tower on about half the site facing Sunset Boulevard; while another campus houses film studios operated by Viacom Incorporated including Universal Studios Hollywood; other major tenants include Staples Center at Wilshire Boulevard and Ontario Place near CenturyLink Field UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion also uses portions of this campus
