The name "Bell" came from one of these animals that they named "Bella". In 1892, Lillian Gwynne (1862-1937) purchased land east of Bell Gardens from her father-in-law for $10 per acre. She built herself a home on what would eventually become known as Gwynne Boulevard. In 1896 she organized the Ladies Auxiliary of the Los Angeles Athletic Club and soon became its president. In 1916 Edison Electric Light Company bought two lots adjacent to Gwynne Boulevard for $5 per foot depth of water frontage on Mulholland Drive between Reseda Boulevard and Glassell Park Rd.. They constructed an electric plant there which became known as Edison Place. When it was abandoned in 1951 it was taken over by Pacific Gas & Electric who kept it until 1983 when it was sold to Alliant Energy Corporation for use as an experimental wind farm location

However, due to financial troubles Belafonte sold his estate in 1926 to developer Elliott Baylis for $2 million. At that point, most of Bell Gardens became developed into strip malls centered around shopping centers with office buildings and other amenities added over time. However, some residents continue to live in Bell Gardens through its own public schools which serve students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
