Bell Gardens is a city located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 157,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is home to Brown University and Westlake Village. Bell Gardens has been a center for coffee production since its establishment in 1847 by Antonio Sanchez and his sons-in-law, José María Moreira and Manuel Nieto. The first coffee beans were grown near what is now Glendale Boulevard and Topanga Canyon Drive in Echo Park. In 1857, Antonio Sanchez’s son Victor bought a small farm on what would become Bell Gardens Boulevard and renumbered it “Sanchez Road” after his father. From that location, he started to grow coffee beans for sale to local farmers who then sold them to other businesses in Echo Park or South Pasadena. In 1868, Antonio Sanchez’s grandson Máximo bought the farm from him and continued growing beans until his death in 1912. At that time, two families (the Moreira familyand Nicolás de Jesús) ran the business together until their respective deaths in 1939 and 1955 respectively; thereafter it passed through several owners before becoming an employee Cooperative Society owned by workers from various Bell Gardens businesses over time including: Grocery Outlet store operated by brothers Elmer Dibble & Harry Katz; Tire & Rubber Co.; National Broadcasting Company leased office space from Radio Corporation of America; Theo Epstein Restaurants Incorporated opened here in 1957 as Epstein's Chinese Place; Finally Koffee Klatch opened on this property as well as adjacent parcels extending into Glendale which became known as "The Grove." In 1978, Josef Martinez began producing Arabic roastees at nearby Soma Coffee Roasters starting up a new industry within Bell Gardens which continues today with many franchises around the world replicating Martinez's recipe/processes worldwide

Belle Isle Park became part of the city when it annexed portions of Eagle Rock Heights on February 17, 2009 According to historian Dragan Popovic there are over 100 historical sites associated with Bell Gardens which include: an old mission built by Mexican missionaries in 1821; an early oil well drilled in 1882 by John D’Angelo; Japanese internment camps during World War II; A&P stores built from 1922-1941; Rose Bowl stadium (now known as "The Forum") which hosted both NCAA football games between UCLA (then known as “Los Angeles University”) and USC from 1923-1963 and also served as home to various Hollywood movie stars such as Clark Gable, Cary Grant and Fay Wray;[2]and more recently multiplexes like Regal Cinemas (formerly Touchstone), Harker Cinemas (former IMAX) & Regal Uptown [3][4]

Bell in 1881 as a small agricultural community named Narciso Rey Park. The name change to Bell Gardens in 1922 and then to its current name in 1945. The population of Bell Gardens peaked at over 20,000 in 1950 but has declined since that time. The area now known as Bell Gardens was first part of Rancho San Pedro de la Cañada Mexican land grant dating back to 1769. In 1881, John C. Bell purchased the rancho from the Mexican government for $5,000 and began developing it into a small agricultural community with a population of around 100 people. In 1922, after years of development work on the property by Mr. and Mrs. Bell (John's parents), the community became called Narciso Rey Park under their son's leadership and management until his death in 1945 when it passed along to his children as well as their grandchildren who continue it today under their daughter's leadership and management. During World War II, much of what is nowBell Gardens was used as an air-raid shelter due to the fact that nearby Hollywood studios were using nearby Canoga Park for those purposes during wartime production meetings early morning hours when sound insulation wasn't available or required on set
