Bell is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 24,834 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Kern County after Bakersfield. In 1853, John Sutter founded the town of Bell on his land east of Stockton and named it for himself because he could not find a better place to settle than where he had been before. The first post office opened in 1854 and was called Unionville; it was moved to what is now downtown Bell in 1865. The original belltower still stands today and can be seen from Interstate 5 across the street from the statue of George Washington that once stood there. In 1892, General James K. Polk gave $10,000 to start a school in Bell which became known as San Francisco State Normal School (now Polytechnic University). From 1902 until 1910, when it merged with Southern Pacific College (now California State Polytechnic University), Bell served as its main campus. In 1915–16, San Francisco State Normal School became known as Northern California Teachers' College (later UC Berkeley). The city's nickname came about when some residents said they "heard bells ringing all around". This appellation stuck and has become part of local folklore ever since. Many people believe that when they ring church bells or rung their doorbells while living in other parts of the country during World War II they were actually echoes back home trying to warn people about potential Japanese submarines cruising near their coastlines! This Legend has even been perpetuated by numerous commercials selling items such as ice cream or fireworks - alluding to how easily souvenirs like these can be shared between locals and visitors!

Bell was founded in 1853 by John S. Bell and his brother, Charles A. Bell. The town grew slowly but steadily until the mid-19th century, when it exploded into growth due to its location on the Pacific Coast and its strategic location as a stop on stagecoach routes between San Francisco and Sacramento. The population of Bell reached 10,000 by 1860, 15,000 by 1870, and 25,000 by 1880. By 1900, the town had become an important commercial center with a population of 100,000 residents. In 1916, Bell became the county seat of Contra Costa County after the creation of that area from parts of Marin and Sonoma counties. During World War II (1939-1945), Bell played an important role in the war effort as a major Army post within three miles of San Francisco. In 1951, President Harry S Truman awarded Bell Municipal Airport authorization to serve jet aircraft traffic; this airport currently operates as one of Northern California's largest airports serving both international passengers and local airline passengers. The comprehensive cityscape offers wonderful views of Adelphi Range mountains to the north while Downtown contains some beautiful architecture such as Staley Hall which dates back to 1875 when Judge Amos Staley donated land for public school instruction purposes.[6] The downtown core also features many streets named for historical figures or places that have significant cultural significance like Geary Street which honors George Washington Carver[7][8][9] . bell has several excellent museums located downtown like Museum Of Modern Art[10], Asian Art Museum[11],[12],[13],[14],[15], California Palace Of Fine Arts[16] and much more!
The Bell Telephone Company was founded on December 18, 1876, as the Western Pacific Telephone Company. It became a subsidiary of American Telephone and Telegraph in 1899. The company was purchased by AT&T in 1928 and merged into the company. The Bell System was created on October 25, 1934, when all the telephone companies in America were merged into one organization.
