Bell, California is a small town in the Mojave Desert located about seventy-five miles north of Las Vegas on I-5. It was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 as a ranch and mining community called "Humboldt" after President George Washington's brother Hernando de Lesseps. The name change to "Bell" in 1872 when the first post office was established at the site. The Bell Mining and Ranching Company was organized on January 1, 1865, by John W. Bell, a father of six children who had come west with his father as wagon drivers for the Central Pacific Railroad. The company operated mines and ranches for many years until it merged with other operations to form Northern Mines Corporation in 1907. Northern Mines continued to operate its mines until it closed down in 1959. In 1957, locals decided to rename their town Bell because railroad ties still adorned several buildings from days ago. The original settlers were not happy with this decision so they protested vigorously but eventually gave up and accepted the name change without any further protest or conflict. Today, Bell is an agricultural center that contains a number of small businesses including grocery stores, restaurants, banks (the largest being Wells Fargo), churches (including one which has been around since 1915), schools (including two high schools and one college), libraries (including one which opened in 1965), a movie theater complex known as the Regal Cinema & more than fifty homes used for storing crops or animals during winter months before being cleaned out and used again next year. Some of these structures have been preserved as part of the belltown Historic District; others have been torn down completely or converted into new housing units within walking distance of most activities operating within town limits today
