Bellflower, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 3,004 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert and is bordered by Nevada to the north, east and south; and Bakersfield to the west. The name "Bellflower" first appeared on a map in 1858. A post office called "Belvidere" was established in 1859, but it was renamed "Bellflower" in 1861 after prospector George Bell's discovery of rich copper mines there. The town site was surveyed in 1870 by Captain Charles Goodyear for General Mining and Mineral Company during their Gold Rush phase of exploration for gold and silver In 1876, local residents erected a bell-tower as a symbol of community unity. In 1888, ranchers opened up new grazing land near Bellflower that would become known as Rancho Mirage National Wildlife Refuge Today much of Rancho Mirage National Wildlife Refuge is still used for agriculture with some areas becoming popular tourist destinations such as Palm Springs Airport which straddles both sides of runway 32L/27R from whence most jet traffic arrives into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), while other smaller sections have been developed into residential neighborhoods including Canyon Country Estates on one side and North Las Vegas Boulevard on the other side of airport property - making it one of most heavily populated areas within an airport limits. The city's only store - Maggiano Bros grocery store - closed down in 1984 due to competition from nearby Chino Hills supermarket chain which had built its first store adjacent to I-5 across Route 91 just east of town center across from what is now Fashion Valley mall lot #2B. But since then there has been substantial development taking place adjacent to Maggiano Bros lot #2B with many major Hyatt Regency hotels being built or renovated next door over time including: Hyatt Regency Wildhorse Resort & Spa (opened 2009), Hyatt Regency Malibu Beach Hotel (opened 2012), Hyatt Regency Beverly Hills Creek Hotel (leased 2013) etc., plus several dozen high end villas developments are currently under construction or renovation right around corner at Bel Air Road Mall LOT#1A off I-5 between SR 4006 E [Canyon Country Estates] Rd./SR 4010 W [North Las Vegas Blvd.] Rd./Pine Crest Dr./IR 3800 W [East Ariz.)
