The early pioneers who founded Bellflower were responsible for bringing coffee from Arabia to America. They took their time growing beans and preparing them properly before shipping them off to Bellflower. The cafe that stands today on Fourth Street was started by Mrs. John Acker in 1912. It was here that Msgr. James McHugh would purchase his first cup of coffee from Mrs. Acker’s son-in law, Harry Jahnke Sr.. Mr. McHugh would continue to drink at the cafe until his death in 1977. In 1951, Pruett & Brown opened their doors and served as the nucleus of what would become the community’s largest coffee shop chain with more than 20 locations throughout Southern California includingBellflower! The store closed its doors in 1984 but it wasn’t the last time we saw these two giants in our town – they reopened as a roaster/café combo called Third Wave Coffee this past year! Bellflower is a small town in Orange County, California. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Bellflower Hills area of southeastern Orange County. Bellflower is named for the bellflowers that grow there. The first settlers in what is now Bellflower were farmers who arrived around 1853. They grew wheat and other crops, but also raised horses and hogs. By 1905, when California became a U.S. state, most of the farmers had moved away to new homes or died from disease brought over by the Gold Rush era. Some of the original residents of Bellflower returned after World War II, when they discovered oil reserves near their town site. In 1959, a new elementary school was built on land donated by Mrs. Harry Laughlin and her husband Charlie; it was dedicated by Governor Ronald Reagan on May 10th of that year as part of America's Drive to Education statewide celebration program events marking 50 years since he became governor and 100 years since California became an independent country! The town has seen many changes over its history: In 1957, there were just 5 businesses in town; by 2007 there were over 20!
