Bellflower is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 24,853 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Bellflower was founded by prospectors in 1858 and named for John Wesley Bell (1802-1872), an American Baptist minister who explored the area and traveled to Mexico City in 1859. The town site was chosen because it had a good water supply and could be located so that wine could be shipped to market from the surrounding vineyards. A post office called "Bellflower" was established in 1865, and remained in operation until 1913. In 1892, a group of farmers led by J.P. Morgan bought land on which they built what became known as the Morgan House Farmstead Museum (now known as Historic Park Boulevard). It ran as one farm until 1907 when it split into two farms due toetta problem caused by dry weather conditions; one part continued to produce cheese while the other part produced vegetables. In 1914, ownership passed from Mrs. Morgan to her son-in-law Haddon Smith who renamed it "Haddon Smith's Bellflower". By 1922, most of the original farming has been destroyed by fire but some remains are still viewable today including their dairy barns which were used during World War II for storage of munitions armaments before being moved to nearby Bakersfield and ultimately scrapped at Pomona College in 1984.
