Bellflower is a small city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is known for its agriculture and wine industry. The Bellflower area has been inhabited by Native Americans since the late 18th century when they lived along nearby Hetch Hetchy Creek. A mission was established here in 1839, and soon after a large number of families from northern California settled in what would become Bellflower. During World War II many local industries produced military vehicles and supplies used in the war effort such as tanks, artillery pieces, ammunition and planes. A post office was founded here on September 10, 1902, and it continued to be operating until it was discontinued in 1960. Today there are only a few remnants of this past life including a small park that includes an observatory overlooking downtown; two buildings from the early 20th century which housed a Masonic lodge (now occupied by an agricultural museum); and one old farmhouse still standing that has been converted into housing units. Today much of what made Bellflower so attractive to settlers has disappeared with little replacement except for some unusual architecture including several churches dating back to the 1860s. By 1861, it had become an agricultural center with over 100 households and 1,500 acres (500 hectares) of land irrigated with canals. The town of Bellflower was founded on October 21st that year by John Cropsey and his wife Sarah Jane Greenough. The discovery of oil in 1901 led to rapid growth for bellflowers throughout California; today they are one of the state’s most popular crops. However, despite this popularity, some controversies have surrounded bellflowers since their introduction into California: initially they were considered a weed because they grew extensively where no other plants did; however, recent research has shown that these flowers may actually be beneficial to soil health and environment due to their ability to produce large chloroplasts which improve photosynthesis
On February 14, 1879, during the last days of the Mexican-American War, a group of American soldiers under the command of General George Armstrong Custer attacked and killed some Mexicans near what is now Bellflower. The event is known as the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1870, James H. Marshall purchased land east of Los Angeles on which he built what is today's U.S. Bank Tower. In 1881, he donated this land to California for its statehood and named it State Capitol Hill in honor of his donation. The first state capitol was located at Adobe Hall on State Street in downtown Los Angeles until 1913 when it moved to its present location on Constitution Avenue overlooking Central Park. Governor Earl Warren (1946-1957) renamed Capitol Hill after himself in 1957 with the original cornerstone being dedicated on October 5th by then Governor Goodwin Proxmire (1947-1951). In 1984, general manager Donnybrook Properties LLC acquired State Capitol Hill from U.S. Bank Tower and began renovating and expanding portions of the building into a mixed use complex including an arts center, luxury apartments and office space that opened in late 2006 as part of Downtown LA’s master plan for rejuvenation called “The Music District."
