Bellflower, California is a small city located in Ventura County, California on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley. The population was 9,699 at the 2010 census. The Bellflower post office opened in 1892 and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1933. It was renamed for Rosa L. Bell (1870-1954), an early settler and county commissioner who fought for annexation of Los Angeles County by Ventura County. In 1907, Edison Electric Illuminating Company built the first electric streetlight in Southern California, across from what is now City Hall Park. In 1914, Mayor John S. King dedicated Los Angeles' new Central Park, also located in downtown Bellflower. Bellevue Hospital opened its doors to patients on October 20th 1921 as one of two acute care hospitals within Simi Valley boundaries; it would be moved to its current location adjacent to Ventura University Medical Center in 1984. The hospital closed its doors on July 1st 1990 due to financial woes and merged with St Vincent's Healthcare System which operated it until 2003 when it reopened as Bellevue Hills Hospital District #2 under the name Santa Clara Valley Health Services Inc., currently known as Covidien Northern California Inc..

By 1925, however, the city's population had fallen to only 25,000 due to a number of factors including migration to other nearby cities and reductions in agricultural production. However, during World War II Bellflower saw significant growth as a result of its role as an airfield for Navy pilots training at Miramar Army Air Station. After the war ended, Bellflower experienced declines in both its population and economic activity until it regained some stability in the 1980s. In recent years, however, Bellflower has seen growing revitalization that is leading to new construction and increases in its overall population.
