Bellflower, California was founded in 1853 by Captain John C. Fremont and his wife, Mary Jane. The land that now makes up Bellflower was first owned by the Coyote tribe of Native Americans. In 1850, Captain Fremont and his wife bought 640 acres of land from the Coyote tribe for $35 per acre. They named their new town after Buena Vista County in Virginia where they lived at the time. In 1860, Governor John Prentice Calhoun offered to sell Bellflower to Captain Fremont for $10 per acre. However, Captain Fremont declined because he needed the money to help build a railroad across Nevada into Sacramento. When it came time for him to sell his holdings in California, he decided to give all of them away instead so that he could focus on building the railroad. In 1872,Captain Fremont's son-in-law George Higginson sold him 1/3 share of thebellflower Railroad Company for $5 per share which made him one of the richest men in California at that time! Unfortunately, when it came time for captain Fremont to Lists his assets during bankruptcy proceedings in 1892 due to debts incurred while buildingthe bellflower Railroad, most of his wealth had gone missing!
