Bellflower, California is a small town in the Santa Cruz Mountains of southern California. It is located on State Route 99 and has a population of about 2,000 people. Because Bellflower had been part of Los Angeles County since 1876, it reverted back to its original name on November 17, 1915. The Village of Bellflower was incorporated as a city on February 14, 1950 and once again reverted back to its original name on September 30th of that same year when it became an unincorporated community within Inyo County. On October 2nd 1951 a fire destroyed most of what remained of downtown Bellflower and forced residents to leave their homes for three days until firefighters could rebuild and reopen business as usual
Bellflower was founded in 1859 by John F. Bell and his brother Amos. The town was named for the flower, Helianthus annuus, which is found in abundance near the town. The Bell brothers were among the first white men to settle in the area, and they started a small grocery store and post office in what is now known as downtown Bellflower. In 1862, they built a log cabin on a hilltop overlooking the town. The cabin served as the initial hub of local social life and helped develop bellflower's reputation as an agricultural community. By 1840, there were only four farmers in Bellflower; by 1860, there were over forty settlers living in the community.
