The Bellflower National Guard was established on Dec. 25, 1946 as the 15th Infantry Division of the United States Army. The division was composed of three brigades: the 2nd Brigade (later brigade), the 3rd Brigade (later brigade), and the 4th Brigade (later brigade). Districts were assigned to each brigade and divisional command posts were located at Camp Roberts in Simi Valley and Fort Irwin in Carlsbad. On Feb. 9, 1950, Headquarters, 15th Infantry Division activated a detachment from the 3rd Brigade at Big Bear Lake in Northern California for assignment to duty with units of I Corps within Theater of Operations West Germany. On Apr. 5, 1950 elements of the 1st Battalion (Alpha) 28th Infantry Regiment arrived at Big Bear Lake and began operations as a detached unit of Headquarters Company, 15th Infantry Division’s 813d Military Police Regiment. The battalion served with distinction throughout its assignments until its replacement by another detachment on Aug. 12, 1951; this detachment’s elements served until its replacement by another detachment on Apr.–Jun., 1953; finally replaced by an organic battalion on Dec.–Feb., 1955 when it became Company C, 1st Battalion (4/5ths) 28th Infantry Regiment.) Bellflower is a small town in the Santa Clara County of California, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Jose and it is bordered to the north by Palo Alto and to the east by Menlo Park. Bellflower was founded in 1887 as a small rancho passed down from family members. The name "Bellflower" comes from a nearby mountain where crape myrtle (Mimosa belliflora) grows abundantly. The growth of crape myrtle led to development of a dairy farm that became one of California's great agricultural success stories in the early 20th century. The bellflowers are found throughout Silicon Valley and adjacent counties, but are especially prolific near Stanford University and other major campuses. In recent years, however, this area has become known for its annual flowers such as yarrow (Achillea millefolium), chrysanthemums (Cynara scolymus), daffodils (Pseudocarya lanata), orchids (Ornithoglossum arbutus), and violas (Viola odorata).

Bellflower, California was founded in 1853 by Joseph Folsom and wife Catharine. The Bellflower post office was established in 1855. The town of Bellflower was named for Catharine Folsom. In 1912, the town of Soquel annexed the small community of Bellflower. In 1915, the United States Postal Service moved its operations from San Francisco to Bellflower after receiving a donation of land from General Edwin Vail. The first mail service operated out of an old mill on the banks of the Sacramento River at what is now known as Pacheco Boulevard and Prairie Avenue. The population peaked at 1,400 in 1940 but declined rapidly thereafter due to World War II and other factors. By 1960, there were only 107 residents remaining in the small community that had been located on a peninsula between Soquel and Vallejo Bayou north of Interstate 80. Today, there are only a few buildings left standing from when Bellflower was a thriving farming community with over 100 families living in four square miles (12 km2). Most interesting about this history is how much it has changed over time - from being a center for agriculture to becoming an important bedroom community for Bay Area commuters during the postwar boom years until its decline following the 2001 terrorist attack that destroyed most of downtown San Francisco
On July 12, 1868, six small farming communities in the Mojave Desert coalesced to form Bellflower. The community was named for Gertrude Bell, a woman who had donated land to the group. In 1889, the town became an incorporated city.
